what is oxidative stress?

Oxidative stress is an imbalance between the production of free radicals and the ability of the body to counteract or detoxify their harmful effects through neutralization by antioxidants.

A free radical is an oxygen containing molecule that has one or more unpaired electrons, making it highly reactive with other molecules. Free radicals are the byproduct of our body burning up energy as we go about our daily chores. The more energy the body produces, the more free radicals are created.

Free radicals can chemically interact with cell components such as DNA, protein or lipid and steal their electrons in order to become stabilized. This, in turn, destabilizes the cell component molecules which then seek and steal an electron from another molecule, therefore triggering a large chain of free radical reactions, causing damage to a wider range of our cells which in turn can trigger many of the deadly diseases we suffer from.

The imbalance created by a lack of antioxidants is also claimed to be one of the main causes of aging. As our own production of antioxidants starts to decrease after the age of 20, free radicals gain the upper hand and are free to attack various cells in our body, damaging even our DNA. This decline in cellular health, as we are all made up of cells, causes the relentless process of aging.

In this context, the antioxidant industry was born and has grown into a billion dollar business. What is not known is the antioxidants we consume every day cannot solve this problem. Billions of free radicals are released in our body every day and each antioxidant we consume can kill just one free radical...and then ceases to exist. The body has its own powerhouse to produce millions of antioxidant molecules every day as a defense mechanism. Each antioxidant molecule our own body produces can eliminate millions of free radicals before it ceases to exist. The problem is that as we age, this production of antioxidants starts to decrease.

Oxidative stress leads to many pathophysiological conditions in the body. Some of these include neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease, gene mutations and cancers, chronic fatigue syndrome, fragile X syndrome, heart and blood vessel disorders, atherosclerosis, heart failure, heart attack and inflammatory diseases.

But science has found a solution! After years of research, scientists discovered the enzyme that triggers the body's own production of antioxidants and then a company found out a way to keep this enzyme active, regardless of a person's age. This company is LifeVantage and the product is called Protandim. Protandim is a "Nrf2 Synergizer" and consists of a well-patented combination of naturally occurring herbs.
